Wisdom

Wisdom Series
How do we live a good life? This is the question that the wisdom books seek to answer. The method of learning how to live this good life is intense. Wisdom literature causes us to get out of our elementary level Sunday school, and step into the world of adult rhetoric. A world where we must struggle with life's hyperbolic contrasts. A world where the “formula” does not always work. This is a world where the sage’s of old lived and where Jesus spent quite a bit of time spinning parables that caused his followers to wrestle with the meaning. Some would walk away and others would cling to him more tightly.

My resources in preparation are:
  1. ESV study bible
  2. “The Wisdom of Proverbs, Job and Ecclesiastes” by Derek Kidner
  3. The Bible Project: Theme videos on Wisdom as well as Read Scripture videos on the specific books, along with the quarterly magazine of Spring 2018 titled, “Wisdom.”
  4. Miscellaneous things I google and find on my bookshelf and notes from seminary classes.
In preparation of this study I invite you to watch The Bible Project’s theme videos on Wisdom. Click here to view. There are three covering Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Job.
The rough outline we will follow is likely:
  1. Introduction to wisdom literature (1 session)
  2. Brief study of Proverbs (Several sessions)
  3. Brief study of Ecclesiastes (Several sessions)
  4. Brief study of Job (Several sessions)
My prayer is that we sink far deeper than the shallow ways of modern life and therefore live much fuller lives.
